Thursday (02/16) No-Gi Class The Double Under Pass

So I thought I would show a pass that I have a ton of success with both gi and no-gi, the double under pass to the outside. I couldn't find just one video that lays all the details out the way I like so I have to go with a double-under-guard-pass-video-palooza!!  So first we have the basic double under guard pass around the outside.

The issue I had with this video was the teacher (Paul Rimmer) brings his butt really high when he goes in for the pass. He also breaks his posture to get the double unders. I prefer to break guard then lift my opponents knees on to my shoulders so he lays in my lap. This allows me to control his legs and get a stack with very nice downward pressure. This position is where I begin my pass. The next video doesn't show the same basic pass but he does show how having your opponent pinned in your lap can be a dynamic offensive position.

I really like the idea of cutting across my opponents guard if they attempt counter my outside pass. The first technique he shows where you flip your opponent to a turtle position seems a little risky to me but your mileage may vary.

Finally a little bonus technique from the same position when your opponent counters. The last technique starting at around the 2:30 mark is the one that caught my eye. I haven't tried it but this looks like something that could be adapted for a ton of common situations.

So there are a few keys to getting the basic double unders guard pass to the outside.
  1. Break the guard-I like to control the hips and put the knee in the middle in between his legs and arch my back until the legs open.
  2. Immediately control high on the thighs-Controlling near the knees doesn't offer enough control.
  3. Suck them into your lap-Putting your opponents hips in your lap is crucial to being able to pass to the outside.
  4. Reach across the body-to clear the legs use your hand to walk across the mat until you can clear out to side control.
  5. Secure your position-Once you've cleared the legs loop the arm under the head and control the hips to establish a solid side control.
Please feel free to email or comment with questions or input. I hope to see you all on the mats very soon.
